Roles & permissions

The three roles​

Every space member has one of three roles:

  • Member — the default. Members see the space, post, comment, chat, and invite others (where the space allows it).
  • Admin — everything a member can do, plus running the space: settings, the desktop layout, membership, join modes, moderation, and the treasury.
  • Owner — everything an admin can do, plus changing other members' roles and deleting the space.

A few rules around role changes:

  • Only owners change roles. Promoting or demoting anyone — including making new admins or owners — is an owner action.
  • You can always step down. Anyone can lower their own role, including an owner stepping down — but a space always needs at least one owner, so the last owner can't step down or leave without handing ownership to someone else first.
  • Admins and owners can't be kicked or banned directly. They'd have to be demoted to member first.

Custom roles​

Admins can create named, colored roles — "Core team," "Moderator," whatever fits — and assign them to members. They show up as tags on profiles, and they double as handles for bulk actions, like adding everyone with a role to a group at once.

Badges​

Separate from roles, every member can set their own badge in a space — an emoji and a color shown next to their name. It's self-service and purely yours; no admin involved.

Channel-level permissions​

Within a space, individual channels and topics can be tuned: who can post, who can comment, who can chat. A space might have an announcements feed only admins post to, or a channel open to all members. Inside a group, these controls get more options — group members, group admins, key holders.

Moderation​

Moderation on DFOS is run by each space's admins — there's no global report button. If something in a space seems wrong, the space's admins are the ones who can act on it.

What admins can do:

  • Hide a post or comment, with an optional reason. Hiding can reach backward — an admin can hide everything someone posted in the last hour, day, or three days in one action.
  • Remove content outright, and pin or unpin posts and messages.
  • Remove the author too — hiding content can bundle a kick or ban of the person in the same step. See Leaving for what removal and bans mean.

Members always control their own content: you can edit or delete what you made, wherever you made it.
