Notifications

DFOS tells you about things that involve you — replies, mentions, new activity in your spaces, money movements — and gives you fine control over how much of it you hear.

Tuning a space​

Each space has its own notification settings, split by kind of activity: new posts, comments, chat messages, thread replies, mentions, members joining, and so on. For each, you choose how wide to listen:

  • everything, or nothing
  • only what involves your own content
  • only conversations you're participating in
  • only activity from people you follow

Which of those options appear depends on the category — mentions default to everyone, comments default to your-own-content, chat messages default to off. Sensible defaults, adjustable per space, with a one-click reset.

On top of the categories, you can watch or mute any individual post, chat room, or thread — an override that beats the category setting either way. A calendar event has mute and nothing to pair it with: every active member of a space is already in the audience for that space's events, so there is no wider setting for watching to reach past.

Push​

Notifications can reach you as browser push on desktop and mobile browsers that support it. It's per-device: enable it where you want it, and turning it off on one device doesn't touch the others. Your browser will ask for permission the first time.

Email​

Three separate email streams, controlled separately:

  • Activity email brings you a short summary of what you missed while away — mentions, replies, messages — at most a few times a day, never a firehose, and only when there's actually something new. One switch in settings turns it off.
  • Space broadcasts — the announcement emails a space sends — carry an unsubscribe link at the bottom. It works without logging in, and can drop just that space or all broadcast email.
  • Verified-domain notices reach you when a domain verified against your identity, or against a space you administer, changes state — verified, stopped responding, started attesting somebody else, or lost its verification. These are email only: there is deliberately no push version, because the deadline is days to weeks and the fix lives in a DNS console rather than in the app. They follow the same email switch activity mail does. Receipts and money-related confirmations are the one exception: those always arrive, because you should always have a record of a charge or a refund. See How money works.
