Keys & paid membership
A key is paid access to a group inside a space. When a group's access is set to Paid, joining it means buying one of its keys.
Paid access lives at the group level, not the space level. You join the space first (however that space lets people in), and from there some groups may ask for a key.
Buying a key
Open the group and pick a key. A key can be offered a few ways:
- One-time — pay once, keep access. A one-time key can also be free to collect (no payment, your membership lands right away) or pay-what-you-want, where you name your own price above the group's minimum (which may itself be free).
- Subscription — monthly or yearly, renews automatically.
Some keys offer several prices; you pick the one you want. Payment happens on a Stripe checkout page, and your membership lands moments after you pay — a free key skips checkout entirely. You can't buy a key you already hold.
Your keys live in Wallet → Purchases, along with their billing state.
Managing a subscription
To cancel a subscription, leave the group. That stops the renewal — your access continues through the period you've already paid for, then ends. If you change your mind and rejoin before the period ends, your subscription picks back up — no new purchase.
Leaving only affects renewals. A one-time key isn't given up by leaving — if you bought your access outright, you can leave and rejoin freely without paying again.
Billing & invoices in your wallet opens your Stripe billing portal, where you can update your card and see your invoices.
A few things worth knowing:
- If a renewal payment fails, you'll get an email asking you to update your payment method. If it keeps failing, your access ends and you're told by email — you can always re-subscribe later.
- Every renewal gets a receipt. You get an emailed receipt when a subscription starts and again on each renewal. Invoices are always available in the billing portal too.
- A space can end a subscription too. Admins can cancel a subscriber's renewal from their side; access still runs through the paid period.
Granted keys
Admins can also grant a key outright — free access, no billing. A granted key lasts until an admin takes it back or you leave the group; unlike a purchased key, it doesn't carry across leaving, so rejoining takes a fresh grant. A purchased key can't be revoked out from under you (see Refunds & disputes for the one exception).
